The Kittitas Audubon Society March program – the Northern Spotted Owl
The Kittitas Audubon Society March program features the compelling history and current status of a local bird population, the Northern Spotted Owl.
Guest speaker, Ashlee Mikkelsen, will be discussing the long history of the Northern Spotted Owl. She will be explaining the monitoring effort, the status of owls on the Cle Elum district, as well as the current threats to our population and future directions of spotted owl management. An endangered species, there are about 15% of this species total owl population living in Washington State. This shy, medium-sized owl is an “indicator species” for old-growth forests, meaning scientists study the bird to get a larger picture of the health of the ecosystem it shares with other species.
