2018 Photo contest winner announced!
“Spade Lake, Upper Kittitas County” taken by Gemina Garland-Lewis of Seattle in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness is the Grand Prize winning photo in this year’s photo contest! Her winning entry was also selected to be featured as the cover photo of the 2018-19 Explore Guide.
Seattle based photographer Gemina Garland-Lewis describes her trip, “My friend and I went out for a three day, two night trip, camping at Waptus Lake on night one and then rising very early to make the ascent to Spade before the heat of the day kicked in. After what sometimes seemed like a never-ending ascent, getting into the Spade Lake basin was absolutely amazing. We lingered by the lake for a while and then hiked up to Venus Lake, just above Spade. That afternoon was one of the most magical I’ve had exploring the outdoors anywhere in Washington – wildflowers everywhere, hidden waterfalls, and getting to be all by ourselves in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness watching an osprey hunt. It sure was a beast to get to, but well worth the effort!” Gemina is also a EcoHealth researcher, and National Geographic Explorer. “I’m from New Mexico and fell in love with exploring Washington when I first moved here seven years ago. I’m all about outdoor adventure and environmental stewardship.” To learn how to enter the 2019 Photo Contest, and possibly even have your photo featured on next year’s cover, check back on this page soon.
